We're sharing a series of data visualization on healthcare coverage in Peru for World Health Day.
Between 2007 and 2017, the number of uninsured individuals decreased, particularly after the age of 15, while SIS coverage increased significantly.
The gap in insurance coverage progressively widens from childhood to adolescence. Uninsurance dramatically rises at the age of 18 and doesn't recover until retirement.
In 2017 (the latest available census data), the population without any insurance in Lima and Callao was concentrated around the Central Highway (Ate and Lurigancho) and the North Pan-American Highway (Comas and Puente Piedra). The population located in hillside areas mainly had SIS coverage.
Between 2012 and 2020, there was a significant reduction in the percentage of uninsured population in departments such as Pasco, Lambayeque, Junín, and Tacna (both for the poor and the total population). This reduction was accompanied by substantial increases in SIS coverage.
